Event Details

Get an update from Dan Briceland, MD, Senior Secretary for Advocacy on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Board of Trustees on the legislative concerns facing Ophthalmologists on the state and federal levels. Dr. Briceland is part of the AAO's talented and dedicated team of ophthalmologists and staff engaged in the multitude of federal and state legislative and regulatory issues. He has worked hard to simplify and find relief from the burdensome requirements and has played an active role in scope of practice battles as more states are fighting attempts to grant surgical privileges to non-physicians with no medical or surgical training.

Dr. Briceland was elected American Academy of Ophthalmology’s senior secretary for advocacy in 2015 and is currently chair of the Board of Directors of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC). He is a graduate of the Academy’s Leadership Development Program, LDP II, class of 2000. Dr. Briceland also serves on the Academy’s Awards Committee, Executive Committee and Nominating Committee. Dr. Briceland previously served as the Academy's secretary for state affairs, and as an associate for secretary for state affairs. He served for six years as director of the Academy’s Leadership Development Program, overseeing the development of future leaders of state, subspecialty and specialized interest societies; he also served on the Academy’s Committee on Aging.

Dr. Briceland is in a private group practice with his wife Susan Briceland, MD, a gynecologist in Sun City West, Ariz. He specializes in geriatric ophthalmology and cataract surgery. He is the former medical director of Spectra Eye Institute and past president of the Arizona Ophthalmological Society. He is a former member of the board of the Arizona Medical Association and serves on the legislative and PAC committees of that organization, as well as on the legislative and PAC committees of the Arizona Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Briceland also currently serves on the board of directors of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology and is actively involved in international advocacy efforts within ophthalmology to ensure patient safety.
